Rep. Sonya Harper has been fought to help Illinoisans with criminal records be able to more easily find jobs, reintegrate after a period in prison, and expunge their records. Harper believes in the ability of people to better themselves and opposes laws that limit individuals’ abilities to move on from past mistakes to lead productive lives. Furthermore, she recognizes what has been proven by researchers time and again: that jail-based programs that helps incarcerated people to better and education themselves are better tools for reducing recidivism than purely punitive jail stays.
